HSEQ salaries keep climbing: what the data from 47 live placements tells us this quarter

Zenergy Live Salary & Talent Market Report — Q4 FY2026 (April–June 2026)

Most salary guides tell you what happened last year. Ours tells you what's happening right now.

The latest edition of the Zenergy Live Salary & Talent Market Report is built entirely from verified placement outcomes, active vacancy briefs and current candidate expectations across our national desk — not survey responses or historical averages. That live-data approach is what let us track median salaries moving 4.2% in a single rolling quarter, a pace that a backward-looking annual guide simply can't capture.

Here's what the market told us between April and June.

Across 47 verified Zenergy placements nationally, median salaries moved 4.2% versus the prior rolling quarter. The average time from brief to signed offer sat at 31 days, and 28% of candidates were countered by their current employer before accepting a new role — a reminder that a competitive offer alone often isn't enough to secure the hire.

Contract and interim market running hot

Interim assignments made up 38% of all engagements this quarter (29 assignments), with median rates up 3.6% on the prior rolling quarter. The average assignment ran 6.3 months, with a 64% extension rate — and our desk delivered candidate access within 48 hours, with shortlists typically landing in 2–4 days.

Fully loaded hourly rate bands:

WHS Advisor $75–$104/hr (median $88),

Senior WHS Advisor $94–$124/hr (median $107),

HSE Manager $114–$153/hr (median $130),

Project HSE Lead on major projects $137–$182/hr (median $156),

Injury Management Specialist $81–$111/hr (median $94),

and Interim Head of HSEQ $169–$234/hr (median $195).

Labour hire on hourly rates made up 58% of the engagement mix, fixed-term contracts 31%, and contract-to-permanent arrangements 11% — with contract-to-permanent increasingly used to de-risk senior hires.

Where demand is concentrated

Three areas stand out as high demand this quarter: Psychosocial & Wellbeing Leads, where regulatory deadlines are driving net-new headcount rather than just replacement hiring against a shallow talent pool; HSE Managers on major rail and energy projects, where competing programs are chasing the same candidate pool at premiums of 8%+ over national medians; and Chain of Responsibility & Transport Safety specialists, where HVNL compliance and distribution network growth are sustaining demand. Quality & Systems roles and site-based WHS Advisor roles remain steady, driven largely by replacement hiring.

Benchmark your own team

If you're planning your next HSE, quality or wellbeing hire — or reviewing whether your current team is being paid in line with the market — we can run a confidential custom benchmark matched to your role, location, industry and company size.
